Sweet Itch Horse and Owner

Suzie’s Skincare Journey: Finding a Simple Daily Routine That Worked

Suzie is a 12-year-old Cob from Devon and has always been particularly sensitive to midges and their bites. For her owner, Lucy, managing Suzie's sensitive skin had been an ongoing challenge: she would rub her mane and tail extensively, leaving abrasions, minor wounds, and bald patches.

“She rubbed her mane and tail extensively, leaving her skin sensitive and stressed."

Discovering Biteback Sweet Relief

Lucy decided to try Sweet Relief after a friend recommended the products to her. The Sweet Relief range is specially formulated for horses that are bothered by flies and midges and have a tendency to rub themselves after being bitten. It forms a physical barrier on the skin while actively soothing and helping to maintain a calm, healthy coat.

She initially used Sweet Relief Cream and Sweet Relief Silver Cream twice a day, applying them to Suzie’s mane and tail. As part of her ongoing routine, Lucy now applies the products once a day from early March through to November.

A Difference After 5 Days

Lucy began to notice a change in Suzie's behaviour after around 5 days of using Sweet Relief.

“I noticed Suzie was rubbing less, her skin looked much better and her mane and tail started to grow back"

Simple Daily Management Is The Key

For Lucy, one of the biggest differences has been being able to maintain Suzie’s skin with a simple, consistent daily routine.

“Suzie is so much less bothered by itching now, with hardly any rubbing, and it’s been amazing to see her turned out without her rug!”

Lucy has continued using Sweet Relief as part of Suzie’s ongoing skincare routine and now has a full mane and tail.

When asked to describe her experience with Sweet Relief in one sentence, Lucy said:

“Life changing for me and Suzie.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Horse Skincare

How can I support my horse's skincare routine?

Every horse is different, but a consistent skincare routine can help you keep on top of your horse's skin challenges. Keeping the skin clean, regularly checking for lumps and bumps and taking steps to reduce exposure to biting insects can all form part of an overall management approach. Your vet can advise on the most appropriate approach for your individual horse.

Can Sweet Relief products be used as part of a horse's skincare routine?

Yes, Sweet Relief form a protective barrier to midge bites and soothes an itch. A daily application during midge season can help prevent any rubbing behaviour.

How often should I use Sweet Relief?

Always follow the directions for use provided with the individual product. Lucy initially incorporated Sweet Relief into Suzie’s routine twice daily and now uses it once daily.

How long does it take to see a difference?

Every horse is different, so there is no set timeframe for results. In Suzie's case, Lucy said she noticed a difference after around 5 days, but individual experiences will vary.
